Incident and Injury Free (IIF) Training

Implementation of the Incident and Injury Free (IIF) Training in Indiana and North Carolina creates positive impact on Wilhelm’s safety culture.

The primary aim of IIF training is to instill a profound sense of safety consciousness among our Craft personnel, making it personally meaningful, relevant, and imperative. In essence, it drives home the reality that SAFETY IS REAL!

Rather than fixating on achieving zero incidents, the emphasis lies on embracing a safety-oriented mindset irrespective of the circumstances. Wilhelm initiated the integration of the IIF culture in 2008 in response to a concerning frequency of incidents within the construction industry, and since then we have seen an incredible transformation of the safety culture.

A notable outcome of the IIF training has been the introduction of a training video called “Remember Charlie” to our Craft members, which has prompted them to recount safety incidents they’ve either observed or been involved in. Additionally, by taking the time to introduce themselves to someone they don’t know within the training course, they establish new relationships. With these new relationships comes a wider circle of accountability.

By fostering a culture where individuals feel empowered to watch out for one another, we’ve observed a notable shift within our various crafts towards mutual vigilance regarding safety. Moreover, because all Craft members have undergone IIF training, they tend to be more open to receiving guidance and coaching from their peers.

This training has thus emerged as the cornerstone of our safety culture within Wilhelm both in Indiana as well as North Carolina. Just as championship teams self-regulate in the locker room, allowing coaches and leadership to focus on the game plan, our adherence to the principles of IIF enables a similar self-governance in matters of safety.
